I realised the magnitude of our source to sea journey, my heart started beating and legs got a little shaky. I took a walk down to the river from our base and stared into the clear moving water, took a few deep breaths and relaxed, regaining my bearings again.

I travelled for approx. 300 kms on the swollen river. It dropped a little each day but has been absolutely fantastic. I have seen giant whirlpools with dark chocolate in the centre eye, 10 feet-high creamy sand banks collapsing into the river, trees careering into caramel and tan rapids and then disappearing, choc milkshake foam piling up in the eddies, and deep downwellings and upwellings of cocoa.

Stuttgongfossen is a short portage, where we were accompanied by some sheep. There are three good looking rapids after the bridge. I saw a nice line in the first one on river right, but when i saw the entrance to it that was blocked by a boulder, i changed my mind and ran rapid # 2 and 3 instead. The boys had good center lines in the first one ....

excerpt from The Descent 15 December 2009
Luckily the channel took us all the way where we needed to go. The time was now 10h00 am, and we could feel the heat. Spent ten minutes in the shade of a tree and drank water. The next move was going to be interesting. Rob & Scott went across to look for a possible descent line down to the gorge. They came back with good news, a line was spotted ten minutes walk away.
